Struggling Readers

Saturday, September 17, 2011

@2:00 pm

This class will describe how to identify a struggling reader, why they struggle, and what can be done about it. Research suggests that 90% of struggling readers in 1st grade will continue to struggle with reading throughout their schooling and into adulthood. This affects their likelihood to graduate, obtain gainful employment, and their self-esteem. The sooner you get them help, the better off your child will be. Don't wait!

R.E.A.D. Series Presents:
Could It Be Dyslexia?
Saturday, November 19, 2011
 @ 2:00pm

Dylsexia affects approximatley 20% of the population and it touches young and old alike.  It affects their ability to read, write, spell,( and sometimes speak) effectively and it often goes undiagnosed or recognized. Students with dyslexia are often labeled as slow learners, inattentive, hyperactive, and/or behavior problems. As a result they achieve below grade level standards and often end up repeating grades or dropping out of school.

This free class brings to light the signs and symptoms of dyslexia and what can be done about it. Other topics that will be presented during this 1 1/2 hour seminar include:

How does dyslexia affect reading, writing, spelling, math, etc.?
What are the ramification of dyslexia academically and socially?
How do you test for it?
When should you test for it?
Who can test, diagnose, and remediate dyslexia (specifically in our area)?
What types of remediation can be done (medication, therapy, etc)?
Can dylexia be "cured"?, etc.

 New information (via video) will be presented on current technological advances regarding dyslexia so if you have attended this seminar in the past there will be MORE to learn. Also, a question/answer period will be provided at the end of the seminar.

If you know of a child, teen, or adult who is struggling (or has in the past) with reading, writing, spelling, it could be due to dylexia. Becoming knowledgable about dyslexia could help change their future!
